Acrylic on Feathers

Painting on feathers has been a tradition in Central America. This started mostly with parrot feathers. This is a great idea because the feathers already have color and the artist works with these natural colors to create a very pleasing pleasant tropical painting.

These birds naturally drop their feathers and in Costa Rica there are bird sanctuaries. These bird sanctuaries would collect the naturally droped feathers and sell them in bulk to the artists.

These feathers sold well and brought in good sums of money. The birds were also very popular and smuggling of birds became a dangerous problem for the birds. Exportation of feathers was stopped to protect the birds. It is illegal to export parrot feathers into the US or out of Costa Rica.

You can still get a painted parrot feather in the US, but you have to find a feather from someone with a bird in the US and have the feather painted in the US.

Instead of parrot feathers, duck and turkey feathers are now used. The traditional colors from parrot feathers are still used. These pictures are great for creating a light cheerful ambiance. They would be great for a conference room because they would project a calming informal atmosphere. You can order a variety of sizes. Large sized would contain multijple feathers attached in a fan pattern.
